U16 girls win St. John’s team of the year

Congratulations to the St. John’s U16 girls who won Team of the Year Honours at the St. John’s Molson Athlete of The Year Banquet. Jane Pope was one of the three finalists for female athlete of the year.

Tyler Forsey to play for Atlantic U20 team

Tyler Forsey, a member of Mount Pearl Soccer Club, has made a major step forward in his young but promising soccer career. He has been selected for the Atlantic Soccer Club Under-20 Men’s Team after a most impressive showing at the Club’s tryout camp. He scored eight goals in four highly competitive games.

Forsey has been an NLSA provincial player since 2003 and for three years a member of the National Training Center-Atlantic, establishing himself as one of the best striking prospects in the Atlantic region. Under Dutch coach Rinie Pijneburg, who is a head coach of Atlantic SC, Forsey will get an opportunity to improve and possibly develop into a top class soccer player.

Sport Newfoundland and Labrador Announces Deadline for 2012 Scholarship/Bursary Fund

Sport NL has announced that the deadline for 2012 Scholarship/Bursuary applications is March 12, 2012. Additional information can be found at www.sportnl.ca.

New Director of Referees

The Newfoundland and Labrador Soccer Association is plesaed to announce that Mr. Mike Edmunds has been appointed to the position of Director of Referees. Mr. Edmunds brings a wealth of experience of reffing soccer at the highest level in Newfoundland and Labrador as well as throughout Canada.

Referee promotion

The NLSA referee committee has approved the promotion of Jessica Singleton to Provincial referee.

Jordi Slaney on trial at Toronto FC

Jordi Slaney of St. Lawrence will attend a two-week training camp on an invitation of Toronto FC of Major League Soccer, North America’s highest level of pro soccer. During the camp, that will also feature competitive games, Slaney will be evaluated by coaches and directors as he looks for a berth on the Toronto FC Academy Under-17 team.

It is the first time in 20 years that a Newfoundlander has been selected for a tryout with a pro soccer club. Founded in 2006, Toronto FC is owned by Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment. The TFC Academy, established in 2008, is a full time program offering Canada’s most talented young players the opportunity to train in a professional environment with the goal of graduating players onto professional contracts and the TFC first team.

Son of Dr. Paul Slaney, a highly successful player and coach, Jordi has been an NLSA provincial team player since 2006 and is currently with the 2013 Canada Games team. The 6’0 midfielder has been training at the National Training Center-Atlantic in Halifax for two years and has established himself as one of the top players in this region of the country. In 2011 Slaney was selected to and captained Under 16 Boys Team Atlantic and played a predominant role for the St. Lawrence Laurentians in provincial Challenge Cup play.

He leaves for Toronto Sunday.

Referee development sessions

The NLSA’s referee committee in combination with our CSA certified instructors will be offering a series of referee development sessions between January and March this year. They will be held every two weeks on Wednesday evenings from 7-9 pm at the new training room in the Glacier, Mount Pearl. These sessions are open to all referees, but are designed mainly for those referees who have been refereeing at a senior level for at least a year. They will also be of great interest to assessors. They will deal with a variety of topics that go beyond the instruction provided in the entry level courses. There is no cost.

Premier Athletic Awards

Please find attached, the application form for the 2011 Premier Athletic Awards. The Premier’s Athletic Awards Program is designed to recognize athletic excellence of the province’s athletes by providing financial assistance to help offset the cost of training and competition. The deadline for applications is January 27, 2012.

Martin to be inducted into Mount Pearl Hall of Fame

Gary Martin, provincial referee and referee instructor, will be inducted into the Mount Pearl Sports Hall of Fame on January 27th.
