Challenge Cup comes to Clarenville

The first-ever Challenge Cup match in Clarenville was played on Saturday, July 10. The game between St. Lawrence and Clarenville was a huge success. It was very well organized and we thank Earle Pike and the entire Clarenville Soccer association on a job well done. Furthermore, playing a regular season Challenge Cup soccer contest at a neutral site augers well for the growth and development of the whole of provincial soccer.

St Lawrence won an exciting game 3-2, with Boyd Roul scoring the winner in the 79th minute after the Under 18s had come back from a 2-0 deficit to tie it up.

Challenge Cup preview

“Greatly encouraged” is Gordon Dunphy’s reaction to another increase in the number of teams entered in the 2010 provincial Challenge Cup soccer competition. Dunphy is vice-president of the Newfoundland and Labrador Soccer Association responsible for senior male soccer.
“Last year we had Corner Brook playing well in Challenge Cup as an additional club and it worked out very well,” the St. Lawrence native who resides in St. John’s said. “Now this season we have Conception Bay South as a new entry for another increase and that too speaks well for senior male soccer.”
“Conception Bay South is set to compete against the four pillars of Newfoundland and Labrador men’s soccer; Holy Cross, St. Lawrence, Feildians, and Mount Pearl.”
