Corner Brook return to Challenge Cup play

Corner Brook is back and six teams have entered the 2009 Molson Challenge Cup provincial senior men’s soccer competition.
Cup commissioner Gordon Dunphy predicts “an excellent season with close and exciting games that will promote soccer a great deal.” St. Lawrence, Feildians, Mount Pearl and Holy Cross are back from last season and the Canada Games Club will participate on an exhibition basis making for “a good full schedule of games” Continue reading ‘Corner Brook return to Challenge Cup play’ »

Angus Barrett honoured by CSA

Angus Barrett of St. John’s has been recognized by the Canadian Soccer Association for his outstanding contributions to soccer during the past 45 years, especially his valuable work as an administrator at all levels of the sport. During the annual CSA meeting in Calgary, Barrett was named recipient of the very prestigious Aubrey Sanford Meritorious Award for his outstanding commitment to soccer in Canada. Canada Games squads on England tour

As part of their training for the 2009 Canada Summer Games the provincial soccer teams travel to England for a ten-day tour.
It will include five games against English clubs for each team, training with professional coaches and attending several professional games.

Seeking nominations for Hall of Fame

The Newfoundland and Labrador Soccer Association is seeking nominations for its provincial Hall of Fame. Up to seven individuals may be inducted in 2009 and the Hall’s committee chair Jeff Babstock says “there are a large number of people who deserve to be nominated.’

Laura Breen Named to Canadian University Team

Laura Breen of the Memorial University women’s soccer team has been named to the Canadian women’s university soccer team that will travel to Belgrade, Serbia June 30th to July 12th for the 2009 Summer Universiade, commonly referred to as the FISU Games. The top university athletes from all over the world will take part in the Games.
