Jeff Babstock of St. John’s is being recognized for 50 years of achievements and contributions to soccer within the province with an honorary life membership in the Newfoundland and Labrador Soccer Association.
Announcement of the honor was made by provincial soccer president Doug Redmond of St. John’s who cited Babstock as being “a remarkable soccer individual who has excelled in every aspect of our sport. A national caliber player, he developed into an excellent coach, a fine official and a tireless worker in a variety of leadership and administrative positions. Breen, Norman, Laurentians named performers of decade

Laura Breen of St. John’s, Rudy Norman of St. Lawrence and the St. Lawrence Laurentians have been designated as the best Newfoundland and Labrador soccer performers for the decade of 2000 to 2009.
Provincial soccer president Doug Redmond of St. John’s announced the three and explained that “a poll was taken of a rather large group of knowledgeable soccer people and their overall selections are, of course, the best for the current decade.”
“Former president George Innis and Dee Murphy introduced the ten-year selection process in the early 1980’s and we feel it has been a very worthwhile practice. I don’t know of any other local sport that has a similar program.’
Those voting were asked to list their top three in each category.

Ernst and Young win Women’s Provincial Intermediate Championship

Ernst & Young earned the “A” title with a 5-3 win over Trendz Footwear in the title game. Laura Voisey paced the win with a pair of goals while Nicole Smith, Katie Williams and Amanda Roach added singles. Jessica Williams, Marcie Smith and Jodie Geehan scored for Trendz. Nicole Smith was selected the most valuable player and Julia Stratton of Trendz got the nod as the most sportsmanlike player.

CSA memo on protection of minors

At its meetings on December 18, 2008 and March 19, 2009, the FIFA Executive approved a number of amendments to their Regulations for the Status and Transfer of Players (Protection of Minors) that are to take effect as of October 1, 2009. Article 19 and 19bis of this regulation have been placed on the list of articles that are binding at the national level and must be included, without amendment, in association regulations. Lawn, Gander take Senior Men’s Intermediate titles

Lawn and Gander are the 2009 provincial intermediate male soccer champions. Both clubs emerged Sunday as winners from the title games of the Molson tournament that was played in St. John’s. Lawn took the “A” honors 2-1 over Conception Bay South in overtime while Gander edged Gonzaga 2-1 for the “B” title. Despite rain washing out Friday’s schedule the nine-team event was completed successfully. Jeremy Brenton had both Lawn goals, the winner three minutes into extra time. Matt Foote tied the game for Conception Bay South late in regulation time.

Mount Pearl, Paradise win Masters Provincial championships

mpmasters Mount Pearl Rosie O’Grady’s is the 2009 Molson provincial Masters “A” soccer champion. The club defeated Conception Bay South 3-0 in the title game of the nine-team tournament that concluded Sunday. Mount Pearl will represent Newfoundland and Labrador at the Eastern Canadian championships in Ontario in October.
