The leadership of the Newfoundland and Labrador Soccer Association received endorsement from its annual general meeting Saturday with unopposed re-election of its board of directors. About 70 soccer people from every area of the province attended the meeting at the Battery Hotel in St. John’s.
Doug Redmond of St. John’s was re-elected for his fourth term as president. Judi Kelloway of Burin is back as youth vice-president and Dr. Denise Hickey of St. John’s is back as senior female vice-president. Dave LeGrow of Mount Pearl was returned as secretary.

Seven new members have been elected to the Newfoundland and Labrador Soccer Hall of Fame. Names of the seven, who were inducted during a November 21 banquet, were announced by provincial president Doug Redmond. The seven are Len Aucoin of Corner Brook, Charlie Chaytor of Mount Pearl and Fred Brien, Jim Hamlyn, Don Hodder, Jim Royle and Darryl Smith of St. John’s.
“They are seven very worthy soccer individuals,” Redmond said. “Their exceptional achievements and contributions are well documented and they are certainly excellent additions to the Hall of Fame.”

Soccer’s best for 2009 have been announced by Newfoundland and Labrador Soccer Association president Doug Redmond of St. John’s. Female players Laura Breen of St. John’s and Hannah Rivkin of Mount Pearl along with Zach Wade and Jacob Westcott of St. John’s are the top players. Holy Cross/The Duke and team coach Noel “Jake” Stanford were two other winners along with executive Heather Slaney and official Dave Liverman.
The eight will received their awards during the recognition banquet held in conjunction with the Association’s annual general meeting.
In naming the winners, Redmond said “the excellence of the 2009 soccer year is certainly shown in the high caliber of this year’s winners. They all enjoyed a great deal of personal success and overall were very impressive.” “This was a year for selecting the eventual winners and in addition to the eight named there was a solid core of others who stood out during 2009.”
Redmond pointed out “this is a good soccer year and the recognition banquet will be a major highlight since it also honors seven new hall of fame members, the best for the 2000 to 2009 decade and a new honorary life member. It is shaping up as an important soccer event.”

Newfoundland and Labrador’s Canada Games stand-out Hannah Rivkin attended the national Under-20 training camp. As part of the camp the squad played two friendly matches against the Mexican Under-20 squad. In the second of these, a 1-0 loss, Hannah played the last 20 minutes, coming on as a substitute.

Memorial and EPR Kirby player Leslie Pope has been awarded the AUS Student-Athlete Community Service Award. Leslie, a fifth year senior with the Memorial Sea-Hawks is an academic all-Canadian and Dean’s List student with a GPA of 3.84; and is an exceptional student-athlete who gives back not only to her team but to the community.

All three incumbents will be standing for re-election when the 2009 annual general meeting of the Newfoundland and Labrador Soccer Association is held November 20 and 21 at the Battery Hotel in St. John’s.
President Doug Redmond of St. John’s, youth vice-president Judi Kelloway of Burin and secretary Dave LeGrow of Mount Pearl are completing their two-year terms and have confirmed they will be running for the same positions.
